Fractal: A Transformable Floor Seat Inspired by Origami

A Flexible and Innovative Alternative to Contemporary Furniture

Inspired by origami, Fractal looks through creases and folds to create a flexible surface that adapts to our body and our activities in a quick and simple way. It challenges the concepts of contemporary furniture and revalues the concept of floor seating, generating new space configurations. Designed by Andrea Kac, this unique floor seat offers a transformative and versatile seating experience.

Fractal is a square-shaped felt seat that does not include any reinforcements or extra support. Instead, it relies on its innovative technology to support the body when resting. Made from 100% industrial wool felt, this floor seat is both comfortable and durable. It comes in three colors: white bone, grey, and charcoal black, allowing it to seamlessly integrate into any interior design scheme.

What sets Fractal apart is its ability to adapt to different seating needs. It can be used as a pouf, a seat, or even a chaise longue. As a modular design, multiple Fractal seats can be assembled to create various room configurations, making it ideal for small homes where space is limited.

The design of Fractal is inspired by origami, which is evident in its transformative backrest. The backrest can be unfolded to provide a tight and supportive embrace, or folded down to create a stronger backrest and armrests at the sides. When unfolded, it can also be used as a headrest, creating a more intimate cocoon-like experience. Additionally, the cushion can be unfolded frontwards to create a chaise longue, bringing the user closer to the ground.

Fractal's adaptability allows each user to customize their seating experience according to their comfort. Whether it's a more upright position with a lower backrest or a flexible blanket-like configuration for a quick nap, Fractal can accommodate it all.

The production process of Fractal involves cutting and stitching the industrial wool felt to shape the cushion. The backrest is cut and a second layer of felt is glued to create the creases and folds. Techniques from shoemaking are also implemented to strengthen the material and release tension on the stitchings, ensuring its longevity.

Fractal was developed by Andrea Kac, a talented designer based in Montevideo. The project started in November 2012 and was completed in December 2013. Throughout the design process, Kac faced challenges in creating a seat made entirely out of textile material without any extra support. The solution was to develop an absent nerving system that maintained the flexibility of the material while allowing it to become stronger when folded.

This innovative floor seat has garnered recognition in the design world. Fractal was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2014. This prestigious award is bestowed upon outstanding and creatively ingenious designs that contribute to quality of life improvements, making the world a better place.

Fractal is not just a piece of furniture; it's a transformative experience. With its origami-inspired design, flexibility, and adaptability, it offers a new way of configuring living spaces and reimagining the concept of floor seating. Whether used as a seat, a chaise longue, or a pouf, Fractal brings comfort, style, and innovation to any interior.
